Nobi “Fires on the Plain” (1959)
Should I see it?
No.

Short Review: War, starvation, brutality and cannibalism – what more could you ask for?

A more enjoyable movie perhaps.

Kon Ichikawa’s (Ten Nights of Dream) film about Japanese soldiers suffering in the last days of the Battle of Leyte is a stark rough film. It is well-made and a fascinating watch but even with a brief running time of 110 minutes it feels like a very long movie. Want to be made to feel your lot in life ain’t so bad? Check this film out. You’ll have a hard time complaining about things for a while afterward.

If you’re into war dramas, this is a good pick. If you’re just looking for something to watch, this may be a bit too involved.
