The Fly (1986)
Should I see it?
Nope.

This is a cheap gross out movie. Jeff Goldblum fronts David Cronenburg’s update classic horror movie from the 1950’s. The film strains to delve into the characters but finds little to work with and descends into a cheesy monster flick with far too much goo and peeling skin. There’s a ton of movies like this from the 80’s where the advances in special effects led to an overuse of the technology to the detriment of storytelling. If the distracting make up wasn’t bad enough the audience is also asked to suffer through Geena Davis reciting her lines while attempt to appear to be acting. Sure she’s pretty and has a nice smile but that only goes so far.

The only thing of note about this film is the image of the two transporters. This is very effective design work and is memorable. The problem is that these props overshadow the actors and story – bad sign.
