My reaction at first. But Holmes, in the book, is rather proud of his fighting skills and there are references to battles with criminals which left him with a tooth knocked out.
SH has been done is so many ways that it's kind of late complaining now. The more or less contemporary Nigel Bruce BBC series was the definitive SH as far as the book was concerned, so if you're going to start another Holmes story you've got to move away from the book, in this case a long ways.
I might point out in it's defense, Billy Wilder's "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes" which may not have been as outrageous as this, but was still out of left field.
I seem to be the only one alive to look forward to this movie (and still liking the SH books).
