Comment of the Day: Avatar
Today's thoughtful retort comes from Brian. Here is his reaction to my review of Avatar.

Obviously, you are a radical right wing Republican with no sense of decency. This film, if you actually took the time to think about it, shows the evils of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft, Rove, Haliburton, Blackwater, and Big Oilm (sp) of course in a different context because if James Cameron showed them instead, he would be put in Guantanamo Bay with the other innocent, non-Christian, indigenous peoples of the Middle East that dare dissent from Bush's illegal wars on dark-skinned peoples who don't bow to that Jesus fellow or read the fictinal (sp) Bible and act like it is fact. Plus, look at how much you care about the use of the word race. Obviously, you didn't vote for Obama and don't support him because he is black.

I saw this movie and it was as brilliant as any Orwell story. I think every American should see it and understand the context. If the redneck cracker homophobe racist sexist nd (sp) Islamophobic Republicans don't like it, they shouldn't go see it.

The Christ = "that Jesus fellow"

"If the redneck cracker homophobe racist sexist nd (sp) Islamophobic Republicans don't like it, they shouldn't go see it."

I'm an independent redneck cracker homophobe racist sexist and Islamophobic, so I guess I'm cleared to watch the movie again.

"Obviously, you didn't vote for Obama and don't support him because he is black. "

Well, that's half right. What can I say, I'm blameless. I voted for the American.

*snark*

OK, let’s hash this out a bit because I’ve been getting tons of comments and my post has become the topic on a number of forums. Which is one of the reasons I posted this comment in the first place. The main reason is because I have a fondness for sharing comments from hyperventilating lefties.

Yes, I am a Christian
Yes, I am a conservative
No, I don’t hate the Earth
Yes, I loathe liberal-minded movies that don’t have the common decency to bury their agenda.

Avatar has a rudimentary script that is far below what should be expected from someone with James Cameron’s resume. The story is terrible. Even forgiving the open-faced social marketing Cameron peddles in, the actual plot, the substance of his screenplay is sophomoric.

Cameron intended to make a political/social statement with this film. Pointing out his flawed thinking and the inherent racist ideology that is threaded through the film is not only fair game, it is compulsory. Any critic that focuses merely on the historic aspect of the technical advancements this film makes is not doing their job. It doesn’t matter if the car is some fancy new mode of transportation if it drives you off a cliff.

Had the story been better my review would have been better. I welcome you to all to search my reviews, available above. You will find numerous reviews of films that have political agendas that I do recommend even though the politics made me ill.
I hope this clears things up.

Comment of the Day: God Prefer Judgment - In Particular JUDGING YOU, VILE SINNER
Normally, I get kicked in the knees by foul heathen trolls snitting and snorting about this and that. Today, I received a delightful blurb from a Christian reacting to my review to Gran Torino.

You know its going to be a long day when you wake up and find a comment waiting to be moderated by someone who goes by the name of GOD PREFERS JUDGMENT. You read that handle and you know you're in for something. Here is GPJ's comment:

"I have not used your service much but I always liked your frank answers on what we should or should not see, but today, as I looked for what you might recommend, I found out, not only are you no different then the rest of the "Christian" reviewers, you are in fact, (Because of this one review,) THE WORST! Like ALL other “Christian” reviewers, you have decided the one and easiest thing of God’s heart He asks us to follow, is not necessary, which only makes the rest of God’s Heart even more unimportant to today's apostate Christian majority.

From what we gather from other reviewers who seem to "like" this filth, there are some TWENTY PLUS disrespectful, God hating, worldly mockeries of Jesus’ name, along with six plus uses of God “damning” people and other things. (Even by a perverted imitation of a hollywood priest.)Despite that, most reviewers stopped trying to count the use of the F word after FIFTY and guess it was about 75. All in all, the Christians you send to this filth will hear on average 3 filth's per minute. Great food for all those spiritless Christians?

Despite all that, your idea that Christians should spend money to see how bad the world has become is yet another atrocity to the Kingdom. How about (instead) you simply tell them to go to their nearest city and watch the naked perverts sodomize each other in the streets, (LEGALLY) during one of their Pride Parades. They might even be treated by witnessing IDIOT parents who bring their children to see this abomination. THAT might begin to wake people up and force them to face the fact, THEY ARE LOSING THE BATTLE WHILE sitting on their collective rear-ends playing the sickening “tolerant Christian, while their children and grandchildren are recruited by the sodomite agenda and DIE of AIDS. GOOD NEWS? I don’t think so!

We research this filth, and YES CHRISTIAN, before your children and grandchildren are RECRUITED and KILLED by the sodomites; IT'S TIME TO GET ANGRY AND FIGHT BACK!"

Uh...fight back? We really need to define exactly what you mean by fight back.

Wow, this review of mine must really suck. Its so bad its erased all of the good I've otherwise done. That's one crappy review!

In regards to the language, I didn't go in with a clipboard and start counting the foul remarks. They are there, that's for sure. The use of g-damn and using Jesus' name in vein is a part of the dialog of the film. Should I warn people of these usages? Probably. Then again, I figured R-Rating may be a tip off that there's questionable material displayed. The use of cursing is in context, these people would use it in real life and while I find it unfortunate it is used here, it is realistic. I also don't expect non-Christian film makers* to adhere to Biblical laws. My viewing someone using curse words isn't sinful. Its not sinful for me to recommend the film either given that I believe it will not lead anyone towards anything disruptive. Under GPJ's logic Christians shouldn't approve of Shakespeare, Hitchcock, Spielberg or other artists who have produced works that are not in line with strict Biblical teaching. Now, one can argue that using the Lord's name in vein is a big issue given that its one of those Commandments and everything. True. Which is why I try not to use the phrases myself and expect my Christian brothers and sisters to refrain as well.

Where GPJ loses me is equating seeing this film with having children view men having anal sex in public. I like hyperbole as much as the next guy but methinks you've stepped out a tad too far with this one. You're nailing me on the whole g-damn thing and then you veer off into the gay guys giving kids A.I.D.S. and we're all going to hell in a hand basket because I liked a movie. I'm guessing you're not the kind of person who is fun to take along on long road trips.

"your idea that Christians should spend money to see how bad the world has become" Good point, because the Bible doesn't refer to hardships, personal issues and the difficulty of living in a fallen world.

I can't believe you think the portrayal of Father Janovich was offensive. He was perfectly drawn and Christopher Carley executed the role flawlessly. Father Janovich was patient, persistent and helpful - in other words, he was what all religious leaders should be. He's not perfect and the film shows that, but he is also shown in a respectable light. It has been a very long time since a religious leader has been given an accurate portrayal in film. I'm not sure what you're expecting. But from your comment it would seem you're wanting film to present the world and its inhabitants in some idealized light that has nothing to do with reality.

In closing, I'll repeat my opinion that Gran Torino is a fantastic and moving film. God gave humans the ability to create, to explore and discuss the world that has been made for us. Eastwood's film gives one of the most intelligent and poignant portrayals of race relations in this country in decades. His artistry with this film has not received nearly enough praise and I honestly believe it is worthy of being viewed by any adult. Will there be people who won't like the film for various reasons? Yes. But for the most part I think people will find this to be an enjoyable and more importantly a truthful film.

By the way GPJ, God does not prefer judgment - he prefers obedience. He also prefers love. God is love. Instead of wallowing in anger, why not try extending forgiveness and love? "Fighting back" is a worldly response - showing patience and love and guiding people to the Lord is the proper course.

* - I have no idea what Eastwood's theological viewpoint is. For all I know he's in line to be the Pope.

Let the Right Commenter In
Comment fight!

When you post your opinions online you have to expect the whole world to come by and kick you in the soft bits every once in a while. I've become so used to complete strangers saying all kinds of things to me over the most inane comments, mistakes and/or opinions. My favorite is still a woman named Tessa who hoped I would be raped and contract A.I.D.S. over my reivew of The Constant Gardener.

One of the interesting things about running film review site is that many people expect me to have an encyclopedic knowledge of every film I discuss. I will be honest, I am a one man show. I research the films I watch when I can. I pay attention to changes in the market and track rumors and news. This said, I do have a life outside of posting my thoughts on films online and things get past me.

Last month I posted my review of Låt den rätte komma in “Let the Right One In”. To sum up my review, I say it is a smart and great film. It is a genre changer. This said, there is a one second shot of a twelve-year-old's public region. In my review I cite this as being pornography. The scene is simple, a boy opens a door and walks in on his twelve-year-old girl friend. Her lower half is naked and we see her pubic region. This disturbed me because in my book the scene was meant to be sexual in nature. The girl was naked, not nude (nude being the intentional removal of clothes, naked being against one's will). Given the budding relationship between the two characters there was also an obvious sexual overtone to the moment. This pushed the scene into the pornographic realm in my estimation. This understanding that pornography includes exposed flesh, not just overt sexual action.

Well, get someone to post a link to the review on Facebook and let the floodgates open.

People who have no idea what I'm up to, who have no idea my point-of-view are flooding my inbox with all sorts of e-mails and comments.

It is interesting, at least to me , to see the absolute refusal of people to see what I'm trying to say. Perhaps its just that I am incapable of expressing my viewpoint (actually, that's likely the case.) Just the same, there's plenty of huffing and puffing going on, click on this link to read the fun.

Comment of the Day: Stop Being Christian, It Makes Me Feel Funny
I'm having a back-and-forth with an Anonymous commenter over my words about one of the Watchmen trailers. The commenter, since he won't give his name (we'll assume he's a he) let's call him Dick. Anyhoo, Dick is irritated that I don't extend an unblinking respect towards the film since "it makes you think." Heck, Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo made me think things too, it doesn't mean I have to praise the heap.

Dick also proposed this morning that...

"Everyone have different believe how life is but because it's not Christian you need to throw everything is not true is bad and confusing."

and then

"It's a good movie for everything that have question about the world. Well when you say that this is a Christian site you closing yourself out to everyone that you don't believe. Only judge that you seen and if you have not seen then keep quit."

First I want to thank Dick for his valiant efforts at writing my language. I'd like to hang out with you. You will make my persistent grammar issues seem like a trifle.

Anyone who has read this blog for more than a week should gather three things.

1) I'm not very good at writing
2) I like almost nothing
3) I'm open to all ideas but reject most

Dick makes the assumption I am closed off because I run a site with the word "Christian" attached to it. Dick's confusion is thinking since I'm a Christian I need to bend to the will of others. This is seen in his second comment. This couldn't be further from the truth. Simply because I established this site as "Christian" doesn't mean I intend for others to be pushed aside - I am merely giving an indication of my way of thinking. Trust me, and those who know me understand this to be firmly true, I am willing to let anyone who will listen to me hear my words. However, I don't bend in my beliefs in order to make others happy. This is something non-Christians are always demanding Christians do - tone down, you're making me uncomfortable. You want comfy? Go find a couch. I'm a Christan, I believe if you don't accept Christ you're not saved - YOU SHOULD BE UNCOMFORTABLE. If I didn't get in your face what kind of person would that make me? I believe if you don't turn to Christ you risk your salvation, it would be immoral of me to dismiss my beliefs because it's unsociable. Now, there are ways to approach this situation and be assertive without hammering people in the face with the Bible. I certainly have my conflicts with some brothers and sisters in this regard (here's a hint, making crappy movies doesn't cut it.) But, if I think there's a train coming, I'm going to tell you to get off the tracks. To do otherwise would make me a horrible person.

I bring all of this up because I get a number of comments both on and offline similar to this. A nonbeliever will blab about how restrictive and bigoted Christians are without realizing their denouncements are likewise bigoted. Our opposition claims we shut down opposing thoughts while they shut down what we have to say.

As to the comment "Only judge that you seen and if you have not seen then keep quit." Hey Dick, I've never watched Japanese homosexual pedophile porn but you know what? I'm willing to make the judgment that, as a rule, I think it's a bad idea. Don't believe what you learned in college - its perfectly fine to judge things. Its good to judge. The important thing is to have a definable reason for your judgments and to keep them structured within a clear set of morals. I get comments from non-Christian about judging all the time. They see this is a "Christian" site and think they understand the theology (if they actually understood it they would be Christian already) and don't like that I speak my mind. I often get the line "Judge not lest ye be judged." If you read Matthew 7 you'll find he's not saying don't hold any opinions, its a warning against hypocrisy. I can judge, but I need to be careful and have consistency in my judgments and how I conduct myself in light of making these decisions on others. For example, it would be bad of me to get down on someone else for being a loud mouthed schnook.

What gets me the most is that while I claim this site as being "Christian" I'm hardly drumming the point home every post. I mention it as a description of where I'm coming from. From some of the comments I get you'd think I'm writing every review like I'm some WWJD theo-zombie "Jesus wouldn't like this movie and you're going to burn in the eternal flames of hell."

Alright, back to the movie stuff.

Back in April of 2008 I wrote a post about the online petition to get Uwe Boll to stop making films. This morning I received the following rant from Mr. Boll himself:
