I understand that I'm an old man now and this is geared towards people twenty-odd years my junior. I still have to imagine that even for the youngsters this looks like a thousand different kinds of stupid.

Movie Trailer: Year One
The writers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg pen The Office and Harold Ramis (Caddyshack and Ghostbusters) have the goods and I can't see how they're going to write a bad script. I have to say that having Jack Black and Michael Cera on point is not a good sign. Both of them are moderate talents well hyped beyond their skills. They're in the business because they're easily identifable types not because they're great comedic treasures. Neither have done any projects that have any real staying power. I fear this means this will be disposable as well. I guess we can hope this will be more than just a series of butt jokes and awkward cultural references.

Movie Trailer: Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist
Michael Cera offers his ineffectual, simpering routine to this film about a meek bass player who gets involved with a girl named Nora. The two meet up, go do stuff and have plenty of heart-warming, and slightly zany adventures in Manhattan. To me it loks like rather pedestrian stuff. It will turn a buck but that's about it, unless I'm missing something.

Juno (2007)
Should I see it?
Yes.
Yes.
This is a very pleasant movie about a not so pleasant subject - teenage pregnancy. The titular character portrayed by Ellen Page (X-Men: The Last Stand) is a pregnant sixteen year old who opts to have the baby and give it to a well suburban couple who are more flawed than they first appear. Juno wisecracks her way through the emotional minefield of her unexpected pregnancy with the help of her father Mac (J. K. Simmons).
Much has been made about the film's screenwriter Diablo Cody. No other writer has garnished this much attention since Quinten Tarantino emerged in the early nineties. Former Minnesota stripper breaks into the business makes good copy and its clear the woman knows how to write characters and has a flair for snappy dialog. Her gift is also her curse however. The snappy dialog does grow tiresome after a while. One can watch a sixteen year old fire back perfect comebacks and wiseacre wisdom for only so long. Cody obviously channels herself through Juno's dialog - honestly, what sixteen year old is going to reflexively spew out a Diana Ross reference? Cody's heavy manipulation may have fell hard if not for the likable performance by Page. This film establishes Page's career and announces the arrival of a new matinee presence. She handles the strange duality of this character with an infectious charm - the duality being a confused and scared sixteen year old girl who happens to have the thought process and cynical humor of a former stripper from Minnesota.
The film is far from perfect and has been over-hyped by both critics and pro-life groups. This is an endearing movie that handles a heavy subject with some flair. Its not a great film but it is a darn good one, and in this age of remakes and superhero flicks, it's seems like it reinvents the wheel.

Superbad (2007)
Should I see it?
No.
No.
The title is fitting. Like many comedies today, Superbad seems like its funny but its actually not - its just foul. Trading foul gags for real laughs isn't new, its been going on in mainstream films since I've been alive. As of late, however, the sheer number of comedies that are lacking in any real inventiveness and identifiable humor is on the rise.
This is a comedy for people who don't know any better - meaning teenagers. Sure, I sound like a snob, then again, I am one. Enjoying lukewarm slop like this is akin to being thrilled over hocking down a Whopper. If you don't know what real cuisine tastes like, the greasy slab probably seems good. The writing is horrible, and has nothing to say. The acting by Jonah Hill and Michael Cera is passable, and not noteworthy. The film as a whole is crude, childish and short on intelligence. Many critics have stated that this film is heartwarming on a certain level, I missed this completely. The characters are too thin to give enough depth to become heartwarming. The truth be told, I kept sitting there waiting for the movie to get better. It never did me the favor. My inability to connect with the film of course may be due to the fact that I'm not in the film's demographic, but then again, if the film was well written, that wouldn't matter.
Anyone who's seen any of the stupid teenage sex comedies of the 1980's, The Last American Virgin leaps to mind, you'll find very familiar ground covered here. If you're interested in seeing what lowbrow crud is being passed on to the consumer these days, you may want to give it a look. Other than academic curiosity, you're probably best just avoiding this one.
