Movie Trailer: Dinner for Schmucks
Maybe they're going to a new direction with the marketing, but given that this is a comedy, shouldn't the ad be funny at some point?

Movie Trailer: Casino Jack and the United States of Money
I am interested to see how they handle this. Given that its Participant Media (An Inconvenient Truth, Chicago 10, Food, Inc., Jimmy Carter Man From Plains, Good Night & Good Luck, North Country) I'm pretty comfortable assuming this won't be a balanced look. For starters, you can't talk about modern political corruption and just stop with the Bush Admin ignoring Obama and the crew he unleashed. It would be like complaining the Great Lakes are wet and ignoring the Atlantic.

Monsters vs Aliens (2009)
***Cross-posted at Theo Spark***

Should I see it?

If you’re a kid, sure.

This is a rare film: a non-Pixar animated film that isn’t irritating and avoids scatological jokes. While this still doesn’t compare to the brilliance of almost all of the Pixar films, its still better than 90% of the kids movies dumped into the culture every year.

Susan (Reese Witherspoon) is a meek bride-to-be who lives in the shadow of her narcissistic fiancee Derek (Paul Rudd). Susan is struck by a meteor on her wedding day. The radiation transforms her into a giant, later she is . Due to her monstrous size, she is captured by the government and renamed Ginormica. The government imprisons with other monsters: an amorphous blob named B.O.B. (Seth Rogen), a smart giant cockroach/scientist named Dr. Cockroach Ph. D. (Hugh Laurie) and a brutish monster known as The Missing Link (Will Arnett). A brood of aliens attack Earth and Ginormica and her new monster pals are enlisted to fight off the exterrestrial threat.

The plot for the film is predictable and a bit slow. On the upside, the script does have some bright spots in its characte work. This film is saved by its personality and light charm, that and it's a kid’s movie that’s actually safe for the kids. It is light on agenda and avoids crudity. Someone somewhere must have made a mistake.

While it is not a must-see, its also not a must-avoid-at-all-costs.

Movie Trailer: Monsters vs. Aliens
Looks like much of the other loud, colorful and hollow cultural gunk coming out of Dreamworks Animation (Shark Tale, Over the Hedge, Madagascar, Bee Movie). Seems to match their typical outline, a gang of two-dimensional characters are thrown together to go on a journey and bicker as they go. Expect scatological jokes and a very loud soundtrack.

UPDATE: When I am wrong, I admit it. I was wrong.

Movie Trailer: Role Models
It took four people to write this movie. That's right, it took more people to write this movie than it took to fly a ship to the moon.

Actually, while probably crude in spots, this looks like it may be humorous. Paul Rudd and Ken Marino are funny guys and David Wain...well, he can be funny (not necessarily my taste - but he has a pretty good track record.) If they can keep themselves from dipping in the lowbrow jokes and stick with the character-based humor, this could be good.

Knocked Up (2006)
Should I see it?
A weak yes - with cautions

Knocked Up

This isn't the sexed-up romp it may appear to be (although there's plenty of low humor). At its heart it is a pro-life, and pro-family (albeit non-traditional). As suggested by the title, an unwed couple find themselves in trouble when the woman Alison (Katherine Heigl) gets pregnant. To make matters worse, the pregnancy is the result of a foolish one-night stand Alison had with dedicated loser/slacker Ben Stone (see image above). Ben (Seth Rogen) is a likable doofus, but a doofus just the same. The film of course tracks the usual "boy gets girl" path as Alison and Ben slowly learn to love one another and run into boilerplate difficulties. There is little new here in regards to the narrative beyond the introduction of the fetus into the proceedings. Will Ben drop his slacker ways and become the man he needs to be to father the child? Yes, of course. Will Alison look beyond Ben's oafish exterior and see something lovable? Yes, of course. Will they unite as parents? Yes, of course. You know the story before you go in. Why would I recommend a predictable film about a couple of goof balls who have a kid out of wedlock? What the film doesn't have in surprises, it makes up for in personality. This is a very charming, warm movie and supports people acting moral in the face of a life changing event. This is something to note in a time where movies normally promote self-interest and low behavior.

The jokes aren't actually that funny, which is a shame, but not surprising coming from writer/director Judd Apatow. Like his previous movie 40-Year Old Virgin, Apatow gives the appearance of being funny without really delivering. He sets up jokes, acts like he's delivered one but there's no discernible humor there. What he offers are visuals or lines that are amusing or ironic and sells them as jokes. The result is the audience feels like they've seen a funny movie but the laughs are minimal. It's actually quite clever on Apatow's part.
