The Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003)
Should I see it?
Yes.



Despite some of the crap she’s appeared in (The Island, Eight Legged Freaks, The Black Dahlia) Scarlett Johansson is a darn good actress. This is evident in her performance here as a meek servant girl who attracts the artist eye of her master, painter Johannes Vermeer (Colin Firth.) A quiet but interesting drama, this film is good for the more thoughtful moviegoer.

Movie Trailer: Easy Virtue
Its okay to be a slutty instigator as long as you have a pretty smile. Got it.

Well, at least they're married. In an anti-morality world you have to be thankful for what you can get.

Nanny McPhee (2005)
Should I see it?
No.



The first strike against the film is Emma Thompson's appearance. They want to make her look hideous and they succeed. The problem is that the audience is stuck looking at a revolting looking person for the whole film. Second strike, the look of the film itself is obtuse and distracting. Third strike, the piece as a whole is boring. They achieve well beyond the story's limits and end up with a fumbling, predicable misfire. Forget this one.

The Last Legion (2007)
Should I see it?
Nope.



Entirely lacking in any inventiveness or intelligence, this film is a lethargic bore. The solid cast fronted by Colin Firth, Aishwarya Rai, and Ben Kingsley sleepwalk through the mundane plot about a group of heroes who fight to save a young and exiled Romulus Augustus Caesar. This could have been a wonderful film for boys if there had been a script worth producing. What could have been a spry adventure story ends up being a flat waste of time. Too bad.
