Movie Trailer: The Bridge on the River Kwai
David Lean is one of the best directors of all time, here's the proof. This film so defined the POW film that every one since then has been a derivative of it. Apart from Stalag 17, probably the most influential POW movie of all time.

I have to quibble here. It's bigger than a POW movie and transcends the genre. I think the blueprint is really Stalag 17 (which was a poor movie). The best pure POW movie is The Great Escape, which is why Chicken Run is an homage to it.

Quibble not - I wasn't speaking clearly. I will rewrite to make my point.

I like The Great Escape and won't take anything away from it but its not as good as this. Great Escape is a bit too Hollywoody...if we allow "Hollywoody" to be a word.

BTW, its really La Grande Illusion that is the core of POW movies - and is probably the best of all time.

Great movie. Historically, it's utter balderdash and hooey, but as a movie, it's top-notch stuff. So long as you don't believe for a moment it's a movie about real history. Just a movie with a historical setting. Loosely.

See this not very pretty site for a first-hand account.

The bridge, by the way, stood for two years after its completion and was used.
