Movie Recommendations #6: Foreign Films
Here's a brief list of foreign films that are worth your while. Don't let those subtitles scare you off.

The Syrian Bride (2004)

This quiet movie carries a solid story and fine, natural performances. A woman from the Golan Heights is to marry a Syrian man she's never met, if/when she moves to Syria to be with her new husband, regional politics will prevent her from ever seeing her family again. Director Eran Riklis offers a fascinating look at the personal effect of global politics.

El Laberinto del fauno "Pan's Labyrinth" (2006)

One of the more visually gripping movies made in a very long time. A small girl, Ofelia, suffers under her brutal stepfather, a Captain in Spain’s fascist military in 1944. She escapes her unforgiving reality by entering into a strange underground world where a mysterious fawn sends her on dangerous quests. Entrancing and well constructed, this piece is a must-see for anyone who loves literate cinema. Writer/Director Guillermo del Toro proves he is much more than a producer of childish flicks (Hellboy, Mimic, Blade II) with this superior work.

Kagemusha (1980)

George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola helped to find financing for this film from master director Akira Kurosawa. The film tells the story of a peasant who is forced by circumstance to pretend to be a powerful warlord during wartime. This is a deeply thoughtful and visually stunning work. If you're unfamiliar with Kurosawa's work you may want to think about beginning with one of his easier works like Sanjuro, Yojimbo or The Hidden Fortress. This is a ponderous film and may scare off some viewers. It is a wonderful film and if you can handle long run times and patient narratives, this may be a good fit for you.
