An illegal alien from Mexico makes his way to New York City to find his estranged father. Once there another alien steals his identity in hopes of stealing the father's money. This could be an interesting film, provided its handled well. The illegal immigrant angle is tiresome however. There's no need for it and it is simply there as a means of political statement, or as an appeasing nod to show sensitivity. I am certain this same plot could have been handled by two people moving to Mexico City, entering into America legally, or any other number of ways. The illegal route is a means of social engineering meant to "humanize" a criminal activity.
Delving into what makes a father and son relationship and showing the boundaries of those bonds, once broken, is interesting however and if the script is at all clever they could turn the unknown identity portion of the story into something memorable. Given that this is being pushed by IFC Films and won at Sundance, I'm figuring its most likely pretty mundane, pedestrian stuff with a thick layering of socio-political nonsense for taste. Watch the trailer and make up your own mind.
