Hollywood's Two Minutes Hate: Union Dis-unity

Gov. Schwarzenegger has a cameo role in the new film The Expendables. Yes, he did do it while governor – which is neither illegal nor unethical.

What is interesting is that SEIU is calling for a boycott of The Expendables because Ah-nold called for furloughs for state employees. SEIU doesn’t like how state employees are being treated. Their answer? Boycott a movie, thus hurting private sector union workers.

Hollywood's Two Minutes Hate: Don't Worry Your Pretty Little HEads, We Will Do the Thinking For You

The easiest way to identify political or social agendas in movies is to simply pay attention. When you hear a character refer to a political party, politician or social movement (global warming, homosexual marriage, immigration, etc.), just turn your brain back on.

An example can be found in the movie Julie and Julia. In the film, the main character Julie has skipped out of work. When busted, her boss scolds her and warns her that her behavior will not be tolerated. During his scolding her boss explains "Anyone else would fire you. A Republican, would fire you. I'm not a schmuck."

The line is completely obtuse and it was inserted to support other anti-Republican sentiments threaded through the movie. Even if you're a Democrat and don't mind hearing Republicans being bashed, this kind of insertion should give you pause. It is political propagandizing in a film presumptively about cooking and relationships.

Will hearing that Republicans will fire you cause the average viewer to hate Ronald Reagan? No. But the ocean is made of drops of water. It is another supporting moment in our culture which builds a stereotype - it provides direction on how the audience should think on a group of people.

Hollywood's Two Minutes Hate: Think the Thoughts We Want You To Think and No One Gets Hurt
Photobucket

In George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four the enslaved masses were forced to participate in group brainwashing events called the Two-Minutes Hate. During these events, participants would be shown images of their false villain Emmanuel Goldstein, along with horrible, grating sounds. The purpose was to direct the population's turmoil over their slavery towards a straw man instead of at the powers-that-be. This kept the masses from revolting.

I contend that Hollywood, in a broad sense, serves the same purpose. Movies are the hypodermic needle which delivers either the poison or cure of philosophy into the body of culture. Through films we get together in dark rooms and are told what is socially acceptable. What is moral? What is justice? Who are the good and who are bad? Movies are more than just entertainment. They are a means of propaganda. Hollywood is a propaganda industry.

Through this feature, posting every Monday and Wednesday night, I will discuss how Hollywood influences us to believe things we wouldn't otherwise believe. I will also be showcasing others who are seeing what I see, an industry completely out of control and slinging the worst possible morality and philosophy on an unsuspecting society.

If you have any links or ideas for the Two-Minutes Hate please feel free to drop me a line.
