There's a lot of similarities between Star Wars and Matrix. The creators caught lightning in a bottle with the first film, then destroyed the franchise completely with the sequels.

Both movies had an underlying acknowledgment of religion and it's place in the world- which was a big source of their popularity. Then, as if they couldn't stand what they had done, they purposely undermined the message in the later movies.

Finally, both filmakers never did anything even close to the greatness of their magnum opus - leaving us with the impression that they were one hit wonders, or even who they swiped the vision from.
