Putting the Antichrist or the devil in a story is always a seductive choice for a filmmaker. There's built in myths and compelling visual symbolism that makes the inclusion of Satan a definite draw. When Satan is used as a cinematic prop check to see how he is defeated in the end of the film. Since most filmmakers are either a) not Christian or b) flat out humanists, more times than not you will find that the devil is defeated by some meaningless platitude like "love" or "sacrifice" instead of the real answer, through the grace of Jesus Christ. It's amazing how many movies discuss the Antichrist but then go on to avoid the presence of the real Christ directly.Labels: movie watching tip

Have you seen Devil's Advocate? It's far from perfect, and the movie's theology is all over the road. But I thought that the film tried to handle the subject matter thoughtfully. The ultimate message of the movie, as I understood it, is that each of us is presented with the choice to lead our lives the right way or the wrong way again and again on a daily basis. Each time you make that choice you're chosing between salvation and damnation, and we must consider the greater (spiritual) consequences of every fork in the road. No, it ain't a great film, but it ain't bad if you have a high threshold for Pacino chewing on everything and everyone in sight. His manic attention-hog performance might fit the role, actually.
