I love zombie movies. It's a weakness and this film plays to that weakness in me on every level. Is this a great film? Nope. Actually, the first time I watched it, I didn't care for it too much. With additional viewings it has grown on me. Within the genre it is transitional in most respects but still superior to others of its ilk.
A group of scientists working in an outpost in the South Pole are attacked by an alien that acts as a doppelgänger. The shape-shifting alien forces the scientists to fall into paranoid, survival mode since they don't know who's real and who's been replaced by the creature. Director John Carpenter plays the paranoia perfectly to the very end and his alien is just plain creepy. In addition, Kurt Russell anchors the film with a variation on his Snake Plissken persona.
This is better than you’d think. An Americanized remake of the superior Japanese horror film Ringu, this movie does manage some very creepy moments. The ending is frightening and gives a good payoff for some of the overly moody scene work throughout the rest of the piece. A good popcorn movie. This said, it is a nihilistic piece which peddles hopelessness. Be mindful that the ultimate point of the piece is that the universe is a moral vacuum. Messages like that not only can depress you, they ain't true.Labels: movie recommendations
